We are seeking an organised and articulate Assistant Buyer. In this role you will need to manage a complex product and supplier portfolio, keep abreast of raw material and packaging trends, look for ways to reduce costs, wastage and inefficiencies, establish and maintain relationships with suppliers and ensure supplies are available to meet production needs.

Key Tasks will include:

  • Take on Category Management of specific categories:
    • Owning the supplier relationship within these categories and working with them to deliver category strategy. This will also include dealing with unacceptable service such as failed deliveries or poor on time, in full performance.
    • Use Category Management tools to develop a category strategy to ensure that the right products are sourced at the right price from the right supplier.
    • Implement the developed strategy with both the supplier and internal stakeholders ensuring that the best deals and efficient processes are delivered for EPC.
    • To use best judgment to ensure that all materials and services are purchased at the best available price for the business.
  • Own and develop the administrative systems within the Packaging Team
    • Manage on time in full reporting, including collation of details, feeding back to suppliers and challenging poor performance
    • Controlling the complex label requirement for EPC within budget balancing costs and risk of obsolesce
    • Forecasting demand with suppliers who have a long supply chain
    • Managing the New Product Development process, ensuring that the correct packaging is available for trials and launches
  • Help manage the varying workload to ensure the Packaging Team runs smoothly. This can be wide ranging and includes deputizing for meetings and project groups, facilitating visits to suppliers for other members of EPC and our wider group, arranging samples, factory trials and dealing with quality complaints.

Qualification/ Experience Required:


  • A-level (equivalent) in mathematics or another numerical discipline


  • A Degree (or equivalent)
  • Working towards a CIPS qualification
  • Experience in a purchasing role, making sourcing decisions.
  • Experience as a Packaging Technologist
  • Some knowledge of packaging or the food industry would be beneficial

This is a full time role working 37.5 hours per week, based at our Newbury site. The compensation package includes an annual salary up to of £22,000, discretionary bonus, pension, life assurance, healthcare cash plan and 31 days holiday (including bank holidays) increasing with years of service.
