Newman’s Own Foundation Donates US$200,000 to Children’s Charities
Charities for empowerment of children receive funding
Newman’s Own Foundation, the organisation started by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, today announced it will donate US$200,000 (approx. £127,000) to 12 charities which empower children across the UK. Each charity was awarded a grant of up to US$25,000 (£16,000) as part of the Foundation’s commitment to empowerment.
“Paul Newman was dedicated to helping organisations that empower people to overcome extraordinary adverse circumstances and contribute to the development of a civil society,” said Robert Forrester, president and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation. “We feel privileged to be able to continue Paul’s legacy by providing grants to charities throughout the UK which are making such a huge difference for children.”
To coincide with International Day of Charity (Saturday 5th September, 2015) Newman’s Own Foundation has announced that the pledged US$200,000 will be awarded to Chicken Shed Theatre Trust, Go Kids Go!, Hackney Empire Limited, KIDS Transition Project, Magic Bus UK, The Songwriting Charity, Shooting Star Chase, The Aidis Trust, The Citizenship Foundation, The Kids' Cookery School, The Honeypot Children's Charity and The Makaton Charity. The charities were chosen for their incredible dedication and strength of innovation, following a nationwide selection process.
Harry Hill, the comedian and TV presenter, worked with Newman’s Own Foundation since 2014 and has spoken in the past about being inspired by Paul Newman and the work the Foundation has done both in the UK and worldwide. In 2015 he has supported the Foundation as they searched for UK charities which develop the empowerment of children. Harry visited The Songwriting Charity at Charlton Primary School, London earlier this year to see the work they do to empower young people.
Harry says “I am thrilled to be involved with Newman’s Own Foundation again. Last year I got the chance to meet some of the recipients of the grants and saw the incredible impact the funds had. The Foundation allows charities to obtain funding which supports the fantastic charitable work being done up and down the UK. Paul Newman has always been a huge inspiration for me personally and I wanted to get involved and help spread the word about the grants that UK charities can apply for.”
For nearly 20 years, Newman’s Own Foundation has turned profits from the sales of Newman’s Own products into donations for UK charities. The US$200,000 commitment to children’s empowerment charities in the UK is part of more than US$430 million that Paul Newman and the Foundation have donated worldwide since 1982.
Newman’s Own Foundation has a great history of charitable support in the UK, with contributions totalling more than US$3.5 million since 1995. About one-quarter of the funding has been directed to help children with serious medical and developmental challenges.
